Gardener remanded on ganja charge

A gardener, allegedly held by the police with a quantity of marijuana, was remanded to prison yesterday after being charged with drug possession for the purpose of trafficking.

Ricardo Bailey, 28, of Lot 150 Guyhoc, allegedly had 28 grammes of cannabis when he was arrested on June 25 by a police patrol, which observed him with a black plastic bag in his hands. The man immediately dropped the bag upon sight of the patrol, Prosecutor Bharat Mangru told the court. A search later revealed the illicit substance contained within.

But attorney Paul Fung-a-Fat, who represented Bailey, said that Bailey was standing on a street and the drug was found about 50 yards away.

Mangru, however, maintained that Bailey was in fact seen by the police with the bag in his possession. He also pointed out to the court that the attorney’s defence did not constitute special reasons for the granting of bail.

As a result, Bailey will remain in custody until July 1, when the matter will be called again.
