Lacking decorum

Dear Editor,

Guyana is already a troubled place and this can be observed from some of the people who have acted irresponsibly and who should have known better. It is even worse when these individuals are not made to account for their actions. The most recent case is Minister Manickchand’s tirade towards the magnanimous US Ambassador to Guyana.

While the booing and heckling did not distract her from her despicable task, she nevertheless made certain that what was given to her to read was done as was expected. It is appalling to know that the host was the recipient of her address. It is no wonder that such senseless actions help to tarnish both the government and the PPP/C as being made up of leaders lacking decorum.

The time and place were both wrong for such utterings. Is someone trying to sabotage the PPP/C further?

The government needs to look at its image as created by these types of happenings. Until and unless strong action is taken to bring these errant leaders to book, the government will eventually become an albatross around the collective necks of the Guyanese people.

Is it not enough to be hounded by the opposition parties at every turn and then having to answer to the people of the country for such thoughtless actions? One wonders who is really pulling the country further into the cesspool, be it the government or the opposition. Many would venture to point to both sides of the House as the culprits. This kind of brinkmanship and immature behaviour must come to an end. No one seems to listen any more; the cries for vengeance, to get- even and the self-righteousness in our politics show the level of civility and patriotism. Our leaders seem to lack an ability to look at the bigger picture. But then again, some of them do not seem to be aware that there is a bigger picture.

Our country is creating its own disaster and its epicentre is in Parliament.

Yours faithfully,
