Former employer wants money back from mason injured on the job -court hears

Accused of fraudulently converting $360,000 entrusted to him by his former employer to his own use, mason Quincy Smith on Thursday appeared before Chief Magis-trate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry and was granted bail.

It is alleged that between September 1 to 13 last year, Smith made use of the cash when he was under instructions to deliver it to someone else. Smith, of Lot 4 Vryheid’s Lust, denied the charge and in what his attorney called a “complete defence,” the court heard that the cash was exchanged as part of an arrangement between Smith and his former employer, the complainant, Terry Anderson.

The arrangement was made in May last year after Smith was injured on the job as a result of which Anderson agreed to pay his medical bills which totalled in excess of $300,000. The sum was to be repaid in parts but the complainant is now requesting the full sum at once, the court was told.

Smith was released on $75,000 bail and he is expected to return to court on July 25.
