Ex-fireman jailed for 4 years over assault of colleague

Former firefighter Dellon Harris was sentenced to four years imprisonment after he was found guilty of assaulting his colleague Cedric Bradshaw.

The verdict was declared by Magistrate Faith McGusty in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts after the conclusion of the trial which began on March 26, when Harris first appeared before Magistrate Judy Latchman.

According to the charge, on January 1, 2013 on Water Street, Harris of 91 Best Road, West Demerara, unlawfully assaulted Bradshaw with the intent to maim, disfigure or cause actual bodily harm.

Prosecutor Seon Blackman told the court that on the said day, Bradshaw in the company of other squaddies at the station, entered the building to make a phone call.

However, Harris and Bradshaw had an exchange of words which evolved into a heated argument, finally escalating to a fist fight with Bradshaw losing four teeth after Harris dealt him a number of blows.

The matter was reported to the Brickdam Police Station and Harris was arrested and charged. The trial concluded after ten witnesses testified before the court.
