Carifesta Ave accident victim had been submerged in trench

Stephen Nelson, 22, who died while undergoing treatment following an accident, had been submerged for some time in the trench along Carifesta Avenue before he was found, according to his mother.

Nelson’s mother told Stabroek News yesterday that she had learnt that her son had been difficult to find after the accident.

“I heard that he was in a trench along Carifesta,” she said. “The police saw the bike and figured that he had to be in there. Though they searched for him they couldn’t find him. Is only when a driver jumped in and searched [that] they found him.”

No one else was injured in the accident, she added.

Meanwhile, she said that a formal identification process will take place on Monday in the presence of the police.

A post-mortem examination (PME) is scheduled to take place next Wednesday.

Nelson of 53 Friendship Village, East Coast Demerara was pronounced dead on Friday, less than a day after his mother was told that he was brain damaged from the accident.

“Around 8:30 on Thursday night I got a call from a friend saying that my son is in the hospital, either dead or critical,” Nelson’s mother said.

“When I got the message, right away I felt that I needed to use the washroom. When I told my husband he was in shock too. He said, ‘no, that can’t be true!’”

She immediately left and headed to the Georgetown Public Hospital (GPH) where she found her son on a life support machine. Though he was unconscious, he was clearly labouring for breath, she said.

Nelson never regained consciousness.

According to the man’s mother, she was told to “expect anything.” Mere hours later, she learnt that her son had passed away.

“He was a genuine person,” the woman said. “Everyone around knew him and spoke well of him; he was a loving child.”

The woman was unsure of the details of the accident which occurred on Thursday evening on Carifesta Avenue. Though there are reports that Nelson had died during a race with another motorcyclist, his mother said she was unaware of such a claim.
