The Guyana Cycling Association of North America (GCCNA), has intentions of bringing a team to compete in this year’s five stage road race depending on the date of the calendar event.
This is according to organizing secretary of the association, Victor Rutherford who spoke with Stabroek Sport on Saturday at the National Park.
“We had planned at a meeting earlier this year to bring a veteran team to compete in the five-stage road race.
“Guys preparing but the only problem we have as of now, the date for the event has not been set and that is kind of a concern for us,” he added.
The former national wheelsman who now resides in Florida said:“Having time off from work and other things have to be considered. I spoke to Mr. Mohamed (Hassan Mohamed) this morning and he said there are some issues with the Inter Guiana Games and the dates they want to hold it and they have not been able to sort that out as yet but the window is closing because we need to have the team properly prepared.”
Rutherford stated that the team will comprise Cyril Hunte, Aubrey Gordon, Bruce Camacho and Ron Ferrier. “That is the four that is definitely coming but others are interested but as I said it depends on when the event is planned.”
Quizzed on his thoughts of the cyclists he saw competing on Saturday, Rutherford replied:
“The cyclists, you can see that they are fit and I think with a bit more coaching and advice they can be on their way.”
