Leaf cutter ants

Second only to humans, leaf cutter ants form the largest and most complex society on earth; one nest can be as large as 30 metres in diameter and house up to 8 million individuals. The ants use cut-and-collect leaves to grow and feed a fungus which they then feed to their larvae (adult ants eat sap); this is an example of a mutualistic relationship as both fungus and ant need each other to survive.
