Canal mother of five killed in hit and run

A Canal Number Two, West Bank Demerara mother of 5 was slain in a hit and run accident last night in walking distance from her home.

Police have arrested one person in connection with the crime.

Dead is Kumarie Peekram, 38, of Lot 42 North Section, Canal Number Two, West Bank Demerara.

According to Peekram’s daughter, Sukdai Deokinan, 16, the two were walking from a neighbour’s home, up the street, with her 18-month-old sister when the incident occurred.

Deokinan said that at approximately, 8:45 pm a car sped past them, prompting her to tell her mother to walk behind her. As Peekram was moving to go behind her, Deokinan said, a second car, driving at an incredible speed, struck her causing her body to fly up into the air until it landed some 20 feet ahead. Deokinan said that she panicked and didn’t know what to do. She just stood there looking at her mother lying on the road.

Neighbours present said that the police took 2 hours to arrive, after which they called a hearse to take Peekram’s body to the West Demerara Regional Hospital, where she was pronounced dead on arrival. A neighbour said that she sustained several broken bones, as related by the doctor.

Police Divisional Commander, Ian Amsterdam said that the police acted on information received and apprehended a suspect believed to be the right person and impounded the person’s car. No charges have been laid, as investigations are ongoing.
