Vendor remanded over knife-point robbery

A vendor was remanded to prison yesterday after being charged with a knife-point robbery.

It is alleged that 20-year-old Curtis Farley, of Lot 42 Vigilance, Railway Embankment, on August 17, at Lugisnan, being armed with a knife, robbed Fazal Hamid of $50,000 cash and a BlackBerry Z30, valued at $190,000.

However, Farley was not required to plead to the charge when he appeared at the Vigilance Magistrate’s Court.

Nevertheless, Farley told the court that he was set up. He explained that the incident stemmed from money owed to him by another man, whom he identified as “Roy.” He said that Roy threatened him after he approached him for the $10,000 owed to him. Ten to fifteen minutes following the threat, Farley said, he was confronted by police officers.

According to Police Prosecutor Lance Corporal Sherlock King, who presented the police’s case, after several failed attempts were made to apprehend Farley, the police finally arrested him on September 4. On that ground, King objected to bail.

King further mentioned that the investigations are incomplete and asked for a two week-long adjournment.

Subsequently bail was refused by Magistrate Zamila Ally and the case was adjourned until September 25.
