City Hall handyman dies after being hit down by businessman

Days before his birthday, City Hall employee Leon Hunte is now dead following an early morning accident with a local businessman.

Hunte, 55, of Stone Avenue, Blygezight had been heading home on his bicycle along Lamaha Street, Newtown when he was hit by a burgundy-coloured car. The accident occurred around 1:30am.

Hunte, who had been mute from birth, was a handyman with the City Hall for more than two decades. He was on short leave from work in order to celebrate his birthday.

Ronald Bobb, a relative of the dead man, told Stabroek News that Hunte had already been dead when he arrived on the scene, while the car involved in the accident was being moved. Hunte never made it to the hospital but was instead taken straight to the Lyken Funeral Parlour. The businessman, Bobb said, was nowhere in sight and he later learned that the man had sought treatment at the Woodlands Hospital. The businessman subsequently called Bobb and informed him that he was out of the hospital.

Meanwhile, a breathalyser test was not administered to the man though he was suspected to be intoxicated. Bobb told this newspaper that he was called by the police yesterday afternoon to collect Hunte’s bicycle.

The businessman was also present at the Kitty Police Station but no breathalyser test was conducted.

Bobb believed that the test would have been pointless since it would have been conducted hours after the accident occurred.
