Taxi driver fined for ‘medical’ marijuana

A taxi driver, caught with four grammes of marijuana, was fined yesterday after telling a city court that he used the drug to treat his asthma.

Appearing before Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry, Devon Johnson, of 7 C, Tucville Terrace, pleaded guilty to having possession of four grammes of cannabis on September 14.

“Your Worship, I does take it and boil to make tea as medication for my asthma,” Johnson said from the prisoners’ dock, before adding that he was experiencing the symptoms at that moment and needed medication.

The magistrate subsequently fined him $3,000 and ordered him to perform six months of community service at the East La Penitence Police Station.
