Gang robs jewellers, employees in Alexander Village attack

An Alexander Village family is now living in fear after an armed gang invaded its jewellery business last Thursday and beat and robbed family members and employees.

The attack on Kumar’s Jewellery occurred at 11am last Thursday when three men and a woman, armed with guns, walked into the First Street, Alexander Village business. The robbers held the family and workers at gun-point, said Kabi, the owner of the business.

Two suspects have since been arrested but Kabi said he was afraid that the attack would draw attention to his family by others.

The businessman, who was reluctant to speak about the attack, told Stabroek News that two of the four invaders entered the upper flat of the building, where they met his wife and demanded cash and jewellery. He said the other two, a man and a woman, entered the adjoining jewellery store and robbed six workers of jewellery and cellular phones, before making good their escape.

The attack lasted some 20 minutes.

Kabi said that a report was then made to the police, who took statements and commenced an investigation. He was unable to give the estimated value of the jewellery or state the amount of cash stolen in the attack.

The businessman explained that he was fearful about the safety of his family. He said that he does not want to draw attention in the media to the robbery due to his fear that robbers may return and harm his family.
