(Trinidad Express) From January 2015, former Calypso Monarch and Calypso Queen Denyse Plummer will no longer be singing calypso.
The veteran calypsonian of 30 years, whose career has produced hits like “Woman is Boss” and “Nah Leaving”, is now a born-again Christian. She is expected to fulfil all her calypso engagements for the rest of this year, but will usher in the new year singing gospelypso and groovy soca songs about God and His Kingdom.
Plummer, who got baptised at the World Outreach Ministries Church in Petit Valley—a church pastored by Carl Meade—plans to release a gospel album by year’s end that will feature songs she wrote and remakes of gospel standards, and a book titled The Crossover to be released next year.
“God has been good to me, all my life. Now that He is calling me, I am going to give back to Him with the same passion and same fire as I did with calypso,” Plummer told the Express yesterday.
Reluctant at first to talk about her conversion, concerned her celebrity would take away from the seriousness of her new journey, Plummer said she started visiting World Outreach Ministries on the urging of her hairdresser.
