Support continues to pour in for fourth Guyana Softball Cup

Popular businessman Heralall Narine of WJ Enterprise on Regent Street is the latest business to throw its support behind the fourth annual Guyana Softball Cup cricket tournament organized by the Guyana Floodlight Softball Cricket Association (GFSCA).

The lucrative tournament, which will see local teams throwing down the gauntlet to teams from North America, will run from October 31st to November 2 at venues around Georgetown.

Narine who presented a cheque to the organisers on Wednesday at his Regent Street Office, said the decision to support the tournament resulted from the success of last year’s tournament. He also is of the opinion that the popular softball tournament is a boon to the tourism sector.

Surendra Nauth of the GFSCA, thanked Narine for the sponsorship which he said was an essential component to the success of the tournament while vice president of the GFSCA Ricky Deonarin, one of the country’s top softball cricketers and the driving force behind the tournament, said that the event was taking shape and promised to be one of the better tournaments run by the GFSCA.

Like previous years, this year’s tournament is again designed to attract huge crowds not only because of the standard of play which is usually exhibited but also because of the dynamism of the organisers and the prizes on offer with hampers and giveaways for spectators among them.

Two lucky spectators will also win return tickets from Survival Travel Agency to Aruba.

Teams will compete in the Men’s Open and the Masters category the latter being for players 45 years of age and over with the men’s Open champion team set to cart off $800,000 and a trophy while the runners up will receive $200,000 and a trophy.

The Masters winners will receive $600,000 and a trophy and the runners up $150,000 and a trophy while the Man-of-the-Match in both finals will receive a trophy.

The Most Valuable Player of each category will receive a bracelet of gold and diamond studs donated by one of the sponsors Steve’s Jewellery.

Twelve teams from Guyana, seven from New York, three from Florida and two from Canada will participate in the three-day tournament.

Trophy Stall and New York Better are the defending champions of the Open and Masters categories respectively.
