Woman shot after withdrawing $$ from ATM

A woman was yesterday shot and wounded a short while after she withdrew a small sum of cash from an ATM machine on Water Street.

Savatri Harricharran, age 43, of Tucville sustained a single gunshot wound to the abdomen and up to late yesterday doctors were attempting to remove the bullet.

The shooting occurred just before noon on Robb Street in the vicinity of Avenue of the Republic.

Police officials have since told this newspaper that investigators are currently reviewing some video footage in the hopes of identifying the gunman.

Her visibly shaken son Insham Bacchus told Stabroek News outside of the emergency room of the Georgetown Public Hospital that his mother called him and informed him of the shooting.

He said that from the little she told him, he gathered that she had visited the ATM and withdrew $10, 000 to buy items for today’s holiday when a gunman grabbed her bag before shooting her.

The man said too that he hasn’t been briefed yet on her condition as the hospital staff had said that she has to undergo surgery.

His mother he said looks after cows for a living.

He said that he hasn’t had a chance to visit the scene to ascertain what happened as after being informed of the shooting he immediately journeyed to the hospital.

Relatives expressed concern that the woman was not only robbed on the eve of a religious holiday but in broad daylight.

Persons selling near the busy intersection were reluctant to speak. Stabroek News was told by one woman that Harricharran was walking on Robb Street when a man approached her.

Shortly after that a single gunshot was heard after which the man jumped into a car which drove off.

The woman could not recall the colour or make of the car.
