Welshman file with DPP

The police have completed their investigations into the abuse allegations made by Johnny Welshman against Raphael Trotman and the matter is now engaging the attention of the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP).

Stabroek News was able to confirm yesterday that the file reached the chambers of the DPP late last week.

When Stabroek News spoke to Crime Chief Leslie James early last week he had said that the police were concluding their investigations. He had said the next step was for the file to be sent to the DPP for legal advice.

The allegations surfaced last month when Welshman travelled from his home in Trinidad to Guyana. He not only made reference to Trotman who is the Speaker of the National Assembly but he also implicated two men, one of whom is a close relative.

After not getting the desired results, he lodged an official complaint at CID Headquarters, Eve Leary.

Trotman, who has repeatedly denied the allegations, has since secured an injunction from the High Court barring Welshman from publishing any material relating to the allegations in the print or electronic media.

Trotman has also sought damages in excess of $50 million for libel contained in a statements allegedly made by Welshman and published in the Stabroek News, Guyana Times and on Welshman’s Facebook page.
