Enterprise family of four homeless; lose $$$ in fire

A family of four is contemplating its next move following a Friday afternoon fire which saw millions of dollars worth of items going up in flames.

The Bacchuses’ Enterprise, East Coast Demerara home was ravaged sometime after 3 pm, moments after it was securely locked up.

One of the now displaced persons, Carlos Bacchus, 20, spoke with this newspaper and explained that he had returned from work in the afternoon but had not remained at home for long. He quickly showered and decided to head out on the road to purchase food. However, about 15 minutes later, he received a call from a neighbour with the horrible news.

“I get a phone call saying that the house deh pon fire. By time I reach back it almost done already,” Bacchus said. “When I come, is sheer fire I see… I leff stupid.”

Upon his return, persons were simply standing outside, unable to do anything to save the burning house. The fire services arrived about half an hour later but by then it was already too late; nothing was salvageable from the home save for a gas bottle.

He stated that the house had been well-secured and no one else had been home at the time. These factors led him to rule out foul play or human error and he is now considering the likelihood that the fire was electrical in origin. He further said that the house was usually plagued with electrical problems.

“Normally the bulb does just buss; is current problem, man,” Bacchus said.

Bacchus and his father, stepmother and 19-year-old brother are currently staying with a relative, a move Bacchus deemed as “begging lodging”. The fire comes just one year after the family moved into the Enterprise home.

“Is only the other day we spend like $2 million on this house because everything new in this house,” Bacchus lamented. He continued, “We hoping for justice because we need a lot of help to build back this place.”
