Boy, 7, escapes injury after falling in school’s septic tank

A 7-year-old boy escaped death and possible injuries when he fell into his school’s septic tank last week after the cover of the manhole gave away.

Bryan Sookram, a grade two student of Strathspey Primary School said that he along with his friends were standing on the cover of the tank when he noticed it shifting. He recalled that all of his friends quickly moved off, unfortunately, he couldn’t fast enough.

He said that the cover of the manhole gave away and he fell, but managed to grab onto the edge of the manhole, by then from his chest down was already in the sewage. He managed to get out after he was assisted by someone who was in the compound.

Father of the boy, Sookram who is a single parent, said that he had recently arrived home when he saw Bryan running home crying.

“I ask he what was wrong but when I looked at his clothes I already got the message. I wash him off properly, soap powder and thing and I ker him back to the school. I watch that thing [the septic tank] that thing wasn’t build good it wasn’t supposed to fall in like that. Bryan would a drown. Dem need to fix it soon before somebody else fall in, I already tell the headmistress about it,” said the concerned father.

A teacher of the Strathspey Primary School who requested anonymity told Stabroek News yesterday that a report has already been made and a contractor has visited and assessed the situation. Repairs will commence shortly.
