Leguan men charged with $1.7M jewellery heist

Two men were yesterday charged with stealing nearly two million dollars in gold jewellery during a break-in at Leguan Island, Essequibo River.

Rajin Ramroop and Vishaul Masedas, both of Leguan, pleaded not guilty to the charge which stated that between the 8th and 9th of November, at Doorn Haag, Leguan, they allegedly broke and entered the dwelling place of Zakir Badshaw and stole a quantity of gold items, valued at $1.7M.

Police say that on November 8, at 9pm, Badshaw secured his home and went to another village. Upon returning at 11:30pm, he discovered five louvres missing and he became suspicious. He then entered his house and reportedly saw the two suspects jumping out of the northern side window and with the aid of the security light he was able to identify them.

After a report was made, the police then found the two men trying to board a speedboat to flee the island. They were then apprehended and taken to the Leguan Police Station.

Prosecutor Michael Grant pointed out that both men were known by Badshaw and also that Masedas was charged with a similar offence some time ago.

As a result, bail was refused and the next hearing was fixed for the Leguan Magistrate’s Court for November 27.
