New GPHC ward commissioned

The Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) on Friday commissioned the southern section of its $94M new wing, GINA said.

The facility which is equipped with 39 beds will be used to accommodate patients in the case of overcrowding in the hospital.

GINA said that this section of the unit was established at a cost of approximately $38M and has separate areas for male and female patients.

GPHC’s Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Michael Khan during the commissioning ceremony said that this section of the building will be utilised for patients from the general and orthopaedic wards.

GINA said that he also stated that the northern section of the unit which is outfitted with 57 beds, bringing the total number of beds to 96, has been identified for the housing of emergency patients when there is overcrowding at the Accident & Emergency (A&E) unit together with other medical patients.

However, this section has not yet been commissioned, as part of it has been earmarked as the isolation unit set up by the hospital in light of preparation for the Ebola virus, GINA added.
