Were the proceedings at the last two UG Convocations valid in the absence of a Chancellor and Pro-Chancellor?

Dear Editor,

The former Pro-Chancellor of the University of Guyana (UG), D. Prem Misir, tendered his resignation in May of this year, leaving that position empty to date. Dr Compton Bourne, the former Chancellor also left the position. To date, there is no bona-fide Chancellor or Pro-Chancellor appointed at the university.

Is it correct that the university’s Act and Statutes state that it is only the Chancellor or Pro-Chancellor’s duty to confer on the graduands at a convocation ceremony their respective diplomas, certificates, associate degrees and degrees?

Dr Prem Misir officiated during these proceedings in the last fifteen years at the university. If those two notable senior officers of the university were absent from the last two convocations that were held at Turkeyen and Tain, then how valid were those proceedings?

This would bring under suspicion, too, the validity of the respective diplomas, certificates, associate degrees and degrees which were ‘conferred’ by the Vice-Chancellor, Prof Jacob Opadeyi.

I would welcome any clarification.

Yours faithfully,

Leon Suseran
