Masked gunmen last evening held up employees of the Trans Pacific Motor Spares and Auto Sales at Good Hope, East Coast Demerara and later escaped with $10M, Crime Chief Leslie James confirmed.
Stabroek News was also informed that gunshots were fired but no one was injured during the attack.
Contacted, James said that the robbery occurred around 6 pm. He explained that an unconfirmed number of employees left a city wharf and travelled to the East Coast business location. While in the compound, two masked men approached and held them at gunpoint. According to James, at least one of the men was armed with a gun based on the information received.
He said that the robbers fled the scene in a silver grey motor car with a bag containing the cash. They disembarked a short while later and boarded a dark green Allion motor car. He said that the vehicle colour is all the police had to work with up to last evening.
Police have always warned business people to desist from transporting large sums of money without the assistance of armed guards. Over the years, there have been countless cases of robbers pouncing on such persons but the practice continues. A few of these robberies have ended in fatalities.
