Car stolen on Mandela Ave found in South Ruimveldt

A car stolen from a man on Mandela Avenue on Sunday was found by police on Monday night in South Ruimveldt and five men are now in custody, according to a statement yesterday by the police. .

The force was responding to an article in yesterday’s Kaieteur News. In the article businessman Ramanand Jagdeo alleged that on Sunday August 31, 2014, when he went to the Ruimveldt Police Station to make a report about the stolen car, the gate to the compound was padlocked and that the policewoman who subsequently took his report was unprofessional by doing so on a piece of paper.

The police offered a different version of events.

“The Police Force states that Ramanand Jagdeo went to the Ruimveldt Police Station at about 0430h. on Sunday August 31, 2014, to report an incident where he had been robbed of his motor car PRR 4395. At the time of his arrival at the station the gate to the compound was closed but not padlocked as alleged, and would have opened had it been pushed. However, Ramanand Jagdeo remained at the gate and called out for the police during which he resorted to the use of indecent language.

“A female subordinate officer on duty went down into the compound and told Ramanand Jagdeo that the gate was open and he pushed it open and followed the rank upstairs into the Enquiries Office. Some amount of discretion was applied and his use of indecent language was overlooked after hearing his report.”

The police further said that Jagdeo reported that at about 0400h on the Sunday he had stopped his car on Mandela Avenue, Georgetown, in the vicinity of GUYTRAC, when he was confronted by three men who had travelled in another motor vehicle and who yanked him out of his vehicle and made off with it. He said that cash and other valuables totalling $1.4M were in his car.

The police said yesterday that the report was recorded by the subordinate officer in the appropriate station record book and not on a piece of paper as claimed by Jagdeo. It added that Jagdeo appeared not to be in a state of mind to give a written statement at the time and was told to return to the station later in the day in order to do so.

The police said that on September 01, 2014, Jagdeo gave a written statement in which he stated that one man had taken away his motor vehicle, contrary to his earlier report in which he had said that the act was committed by three men.

Police said Jagdeo has been informed of the developments in the matter.
