Duo charged with theft of $3M from businessman

Johanna Chan and Mahadeo Harrinarine were on Friday placed on a total of $300,000 bail after denying stealing over $3M from their employer.

The allegation against Chan, 20, of Lot 118 Anna Catherina, West Coast Demerara and Harrinarine, 43, of lot 2 “X” Anna Catherina, is that on October 8, at Georgetown, they both stole $3,289,000 belonging to Annan Rohan, called “Tony.”

They were not required to plead to the indictable charge read to them by city Magistrate Ann McLennan in Court Two.

Prosecutor Deniro Jones objected to bail, citing the gravity of the offence. He told the court that both defendants were sent out to various areas to collect money for Rohan, as whenever he is out of the country they are left in-charge of his fuel business.

He added that at the time of the theft, Chan and Harrinarine transacted business under the false presence that they were Rohan. The prosecutor, however, noted that investigations are still ongoing.

After listening to the submissions, the magistrate set bail for Chan and Harrinarine at $150,000 each and ordered them to report to the officer-in-charge of the Brickdam Police Station every Friday.

Their matter will be called again on January 5 before Magistrate Judy Latchman.
