I am quite surprised that such a trivial matter, involving the use of an ATV by a youngster during a recent cricket match at the Enmore Community Centre was publicized in your letter column (‘Save the Enmore Community Centre from these obnoxious individuals,’ SN, February 25). While I agree that individuals are free to pen their opinions, they must choose carefully what issues they write about. The Chairman’s account of what transpired on February 23 is quite petty. He should understand that the Enmore Community Centre serves the people and their children living there.
The individuals who were there on the day in question were merely having their usual day of fun, and a well-known individual who was branded as “obnoxious” by the Chairman was watching his son ride an ATV. Editor, everyone there can attest that the area used was not damaged, as was claimed, and no one was verbally attacked.
The individuals were merely upset and raised concerns that people are not allowed to have their fun.
I am surprised that the Chairman penned such a letter casting aspersions on individuals who are perceived to be affluent. My concern is that what does being wealthy have to do with having fun with friends and family.
Editor, the Chairman rightly said that hard work is being put in to restore the centre to its earlier prominence. But this was inevitable since the centre serves the needs of the people. His unfounded opinion that the centre suffered severe neglect over the past decade is a complete distortion of the facts.
The facility’s accommodation became derelict after many years but the centre was always maintained. Whoever is crawling out of the woodwork as he so impudently puts it, the centre is getting the support it needs. I am all for development at the centre, but this abuse of power by the Chairman must cease if he intends to get support. Members are concerned that the Chairman seems to be undermining the authority of the council, since he is not a member.
The facility was not named the Enmore Cricket Ground, but rather the Enmore Community Centre. The council surely must have taken this fact into account when drafting the rules. There are five disciplines at the centre, namely cricket, volleyball, table tennis, dominoes and athletics, all headed by separate individuals.
Editor, favouritism is being shown to cricket which is headed by the Chairman. For instance if there is a cricket match then volleyball players are restrained from playing although there is a designated area in the centre for this sport.
Let us therefore encourage our youths to develop themselves and stop these trivial issues.
