League leaders Pele maintain unbeaten run

League leaders Pele continued their unbeaten run in the Georgetown Football Association (GFA) first division tourney, defeating fifth placed side Northern Rangers 5-2 on Sunday at the Tucville Community Centre ground.

Marlon Nedd and Calvin Shepherd netted two goals each for the winners while Okeene Fraser scored in the 87th minute. Nedd registered his double in the sixth and 33rd minutes while Shepherd scored in the 56th and 61st minute.

On target for the losers in the 63rd and 80th minutes were Sherwin Vincent and Omalli Nassy respectively.  Nedd opened the scoring for the winners with a simple finish to the empty net after receiving a pass from Shepherd on the left side within the centre of the area, following a two-on-one situation with the opposing custodian.

He would then seal his first half brace, lashing his effort down the middle of the goal from within the centre of the box, after fighting off his marker.  The score line would then be increased 11 minutes in the second stanza as Shepherd netted through a powerful struck effort from the centre of the field that was tipped into the back of the net by the diving shot-stopper.

He would then make it 4-0 five minutes later with a simple finish into the lower right hand corner, after being in a one-on-one situation within the centre of the 18 yard box.  On the defensive for most of the fixture, Northern Rangers would finally pull one back two minutes later as Vincent netted, rifling his effort into the lower left corner after latching onto a through pass in the centre of the park.

Pele would then suffer an unlikely setback as Shepherd was sent off in the 75th minute, picking up his second yellow card for a lunging challenge on the Kitty custodian within the left side of the area.  Nassy would then cut the deficit to two five minutes later with a clinical right footed finish within the right side of the box, down the middle of the goal following a one-on-one with the Pele goalkeeper.

However, any intentions of staging a late comeback would be extinguished as Fraser netted with a sliding effort into the left hand corner, after pouncing on a deflected within the left side of the penalty area.

With the win, Pele move to 28 points while Northern Rangers remain on nine points. Meanwhile in the second matchup, home side and second placed unit Fruta Conquerors blew away Beacons FC by a 12-0 score line.

Dwayne Lawrence and Eon Alleyne led the way with respective hat tricks while Kevin Barrow grabbed a double.

Lawrence registered his goals in the fourth, ninth and 57th minutes while Alleyne got on target in the 27th, 67th and 82nd minutes and Barrow netted in the 11th and 18th minutes.

Completing the score line with solo strikes were Raphael Edwards, Trevon Lythcott, Odel Williams and Jermaine Junior in the 32nd, 36th, 53rd and 74th minutes respectively.

With the win, Fruta Conquerors moved within six points of the league leaders at 22 points while possessing a game in hand. Due to the defeat, Beacons remain in the cellar position on three points.
