Opposition needs to put forward a cabinet in waiting with credible names and a manifesto

Dear Editor,

As Guyana’s electioneering gets into the swing I can’t help but being amused by both the propaganda of the ruling People’s Progressive Party (PPP) and particularly the immaturity of some opposition politicians.

It’s time the opposition become pragmatic and less involved in the protocols of alliance politics.

The rampant corruption, arrogance and shady deals of the governing party are well-known by the Guyanese electorate who are in the mood for change. Nevertheless the Indian-based PPP will still attract a significant number of votes at the upcoming national elections and capture the Presidency.

The opposition parties simply have to offer a common and balanced slate of decent people from every race, economic strata, age group, gender, ethnicity, religion and academia and the PPP will be ousted.

Failure to adopt this strategy will witness another gridlocked government and further stall Guyana’s progress.

The opposition needs to get down to the nitty-gritty of running a new government- put forward a   cabinet in waiting with credible names attached to specific portfolios and a manifesto for Guyanese to consider.

The proposed alliance should provide a manifesto of practical policies with a timeline for implementation. This must include steps for constitutional reforms, a blueprint for foreign and local investment and a revised educational curriculum. Such a curriculum should seek to inculcate in the new generation the moral and ethical values of a modern society.

The manifesto should be available for public perusal and comment. Time is of the essence.

Yours faithfully,
