What if Nagamootoo were to join APNU?

Dear Editor,

Pro-democracy leaders will agree that positive change in Guyana must begin with the PPP’s removal from office. Not only because frequent regime change is intrinsically desirable, but also because the current administration is irreversibly locked onto a totalitarian course, which must be arrested and undone. Unfortunately for Guyanese, many politicians are motivated by personal considerations, rather than the national good. Such considerations may include their positions in their party and the possibility of them obtaining jobs in government. Sadly, many politicians may prefer to see their country continue along the road to total dictatorship, rather than risk losing donors’ funds for their parties. If we want positive change to occur, we must consider all possible means of achieving desirable ends, including unorthodox ones.

Many in the AFC appear to be erecting barriers to the possibility of the two opposition entities co-operating in a meaningful manner. Fortunately for Guyanese, there may be another way. What if Moses Nagamootoo were to join the APNU?

Editor, ideally, Guyanese would be able to look beyond race. Hopefully, some day, we will all realise that a decent leader’s background does not indicate how he will serve once in office. The present reality is, however, far from ideal. And any effort to work towards unity will be met with unrelenting resistance from those who practise race-baiting and fear-mongering as their means of staying in power.

It follows then, that while we work to build a united country, it is important for all Guyanese to feel that they are represented in government.

Mr Nagamootoo is well respected by many Guyanese; his integrity is much admired. Mr Nagamootoo may have the rare opportunity to change Guyana’s future and, in the process, leave a legacy of which he would be proud. If Mr Nagamootoo were to set aside partisan considerations and look at what is best for Guyana, perhaps he may decide to do the only logical thing.

A Granger-Nagamootoo ticket would be almost certain to unseat the current PPP dictatorship. And such would be the first step in the process of repairing a broken land.

 Yours faithfully,

Mark DaCosta
