Region Six security workers strike over pay

Home Safe Security workers are yet to receive salaries for November and December 2014

The security service is contracted by Region Six to provide protection to several government entities and to date, workers are yet to receive their salaries for November and December 2014.

Stabroek News understands that the security guards walked off their jobs in protest at the treatment by their employers. They are tired, the workers said of the treatment being meted out to them.

“Every month we get the month before [salary] till the third week in the [new] month but is overbearing now. Christmas come and gone no money!” said Janice Whyte, a disgusted worker told the media.

Whyte along with other security guards employed with Home Safe Security yesterday protested in front of the Regional Democratic Council Region 6 and demanded they be paid their salaries.

The workers have made a firm decision not return to work unless they are paid for November and December.

The majority of the security guards employed by the company are single mothers, Stabroek News was told and they depend mainly on their salary for their daily provisions.

The security guards have complained bitterly over the ill treatment and many said they are unable to pay their bills, while some noted they are struggling to provide a daily meal for their family.

The mothers also claimed they are unable to send their children to school due to the non-payment of their salaries.

One mother Vanessa Benjamin said she has been unable to provide the customary pepperpot at Christmas to her family much to their disappointment.

Meanwhile, Regional Vice Chairman Bhopaul Jagroo has told the media the Ministry of Finance has been notified of the situation and efforts are being made for monies to be released to the security firm.

He, however explained the administration erred and did not make arrangements for monies to be handed over to the security agency. Further, he said, all accounts were closed off in November.
