Miner accused of beating wife

After almost two decades of marriage, a miner yesterday found himself in court for allegedly beating his wife.

Colin Culley, 45, appeared before Magistrate Zamilla Ally at the Sparendaam Magistrate’s Court, which heard that he had been abusing his wife, Jacqueline Jacobs, throughout their 19-year marriage.

He is accused of beating Jacobs at their 607 Cummings Lodge home. He pleaded not guilty.

Prosecutor John Singh objected to bail based on the information he received about the ongoing abuse. This prompted the magistrate to ask Jacobs if she had ever reported her husband before. The woman said, “No.” As a result, the magistrate asked Culley if he had anywhere to go until the completion of his case. Cully told the court he would spend time at his mother’s.

The magistrate then granted Culley $40,000 bail and set the next hearing for February 16.
