Ex-Mahdia Gold workers still to receive word on owed wages

Former employees of the Mahdia Gold Corp (MGC) have yet to be paid wages owed to them despite repeated promises by company director Alan Zaakir that the situation would be dealt with.

The former workers resumed protesting last week Monday at the company’s Barrack Street, Kingston offices over the money still owed to them.

Derek Trim, one of the protestors, told Stabroek News on Monday that the protest was postponed because of rain. He added that he received no word from the MGC management as yet about when he would be paid.

Trim said the employees will resume protesting until the money owed to them is paid.

When Stabroek News visited the company’s offices last week Tuesday, it was met with aggression by a man in the compound. “Don’t come back hay. Y’all ain’t done report pun de story? Wha ya coming back hay fah?” he asked.

This publication visited the MGC offices once more on Monday but no one came out to answer.

Workers had previously staged a protest last year October after not being paid for six months. According to axed employee Nigel Bacchus, they were paid half of their monies after last year’s protest.

At that time, Zaakir had told this publication that there was a change in management that had resulted in delayed payments. Zaakir had been insistent that “there’s no story here” because some of the money was paid over and MGC was making plans to pay the rest.
