The mother of the 18-year-old, who has alleged that he was sodomised by a number of men, is calling for the police to conduct a thorough investigation even as she prays for the full recovery of her child.
The mother said it breaks her heart to visit the Georgetown Public Hospital daily to see her son lying on a bed with his eyes closed, not speaking or eating.
On Sunday when she visited, she said, he was responding to instructions. “If we say like turn so that we could take off the sheet he turn…before he use to just lie down,” the woman said.
Before that, he was sitting up on his bed one day, but when they spoke to him, his mother said, he started to cry and did not answer.
The young man is being fed intravenously as he refuses to eat and he keeps his eyes tightly shut. She said her son worked at a supermarket and with other people before the alleged incident and he was in good health and strength.
However, the second to last of her nine children returned home New Year’s Day after spending the night at a friend who had invited him to a party. He was in pain and according to his mother he bled when using the toilet and when she asked him what happened he alleged that his friend and other men had raped him.
The woman rushed her son to the West Demerara Hospital where he was admitted and doctors said they saw evidence of sexually activity in his anus. He was later admitted to the GPH’s Psychiatric Ward, but because of his poor physical condition medical personnel said they could not have attended to him. He was later admitted to the surgical ward where has remained since.
The police had arrested the named friend but released him after he denied the allegation. The hospitalized young man is yet to give a statement to the police.
His mother said she wants justice for her son.
