‘Choke and rob’ suspect remanded after court hears of domestic violence warrant

Gavin Major, who allegedly choked a woman and robbed her of BlackBerry smartphone, was yesterday remanded to prison after a court heard there was an outstanding warrant for him in a domestic violence case.

On February 4, at Albouystown, Georgetown, Major allegedly robbed Shemika Thomas of the phone, valued $84,000. He denied committing the crime.

The prosecutor told the court that Thomas was walking in Albouystown when she was approached by Major, who choked her and escaped with her phone.

The prosecutor further objected to bail while pointing out that a warrant had to be issued for Major on a domestic violence charge and if released he will likely not return for trial.

The prosecution’s objection was upheld and Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry remanded Major to prison until February 24, when he will appear before Magistrate Annette Singh in Court 11.
