Abrams eyes Golden Jaguars recall

Veteran sharp-shooter Anthony Abrams believes he still has the quality to represent the Golden Jaguars senior setup during their upcoming 2018 International Federation of Association Football (FIFA) World Cup Qualifying Campaign.

Anthony, 36, has been capped by the national senior setup at several levels inclusive of the u-19, u-20, u-21 and U-23 programmes. His last international senior cap came against the St. Lucians on October 25th 2012.

Speaking exclusively to Stabroek Sports, the Slingerz FC marksman said:” I still feel I can give two more years to the country so I haven’t thrown away my boots as yet. I am determined to make the senior side,” he added.

According to the former Alpha United and Fruta Conquerors talisman, “The possibility exists that I can be returning in June. I still feel I got it in me, it’s just the fitness I have to work on but I am hungry to be a part of the selection come June.

“Right now I am training as hard as ever to get to the level where the performances will come. Once we (Slingerz) play as a unit I will deliver.”

Questioned about his thoughts on the recent confirmation of Jamaal Shabazz and Wayne Dover to the Head and Assistant Coaching posts respectively, he said: “These guys work well together. They got good understanding and I think they will carry Guyana football to a higher height and another level.”

Abrams added: “Because they work well together and there is no animosity between them and they are two good coaches that I worked under and have respect for, I believe Guyana’s football is good hands.”

Asked if he has been contacted by the management staff to “I spoke with Jamal, he said he given them a trial but the possibly exist of me returning to the team. Once I get myself fit and to the next level anything is a possibility”.

Following the confirmation of Shabazz to the helm of the senior programme, the Golden Jaguars secured home international wins against CFU rivals Grenada and St. Lucia by identical 2-0 margins.

Guyana will also commence their 2018 FIFA World Cup Qualifying campaign in an away fixture against St. Vincent and the Grenadines on June 8th. The return match of the two leg series on local shores will be held on the 16th of June at the National Stadium in Providence.
