Repeat offender jailed for assaulting spouse and toddler

Theron Pereira, who was previously charged with assaulting his spouse, will be spending one month in prison after he was found guilty of assaulting both her and a toddler.

Pereira, who opted to give an unsworn statement from the prisoner’s dock, said he accidentally hit Kamawattie Lall and the child, who was in the woman’s arms, while he was removing the belt from his pants. Upon realising what had happened, he said he took the crying child outside, where they sat on a bench.

Pereira told the court that the following morning, when he woke up to go apologise to Lall, she was already leaving with the child. He said that he was arrested shortly after.

After listening to the testimony given by Pereira and reviewing the facts of the case, Magistrate Annette Singh found the man to be guilty of the offence and sentenced him to one month in jail.

When Magistrate Singh asked Lall if she was going to take Pereira back, she indicated that she would only do so if he seeks the necessary counselling.

As a result, Pereira was also ordered to seek counselling upon his release from prison.
