Fish vendor shot in butt during wharf robbery

A fish vendor was shot in his buttocks during a robbery at the Meadow Bank Wharf early yesterday morning.

Ganesh Vishwanauth, of Grove, East Bank Demerara, was resisting the two men when he was shot at around 3AM.

Police, in a statement on the shooting, said the two men, one of whom was armed with a gun, demanded cash and Vishwanauth resisted. They subsequently shot Vishwanauth in his buttocks and the men escaped with a sum of $240,000.

Vishwanauth was treated at the hospital and discharged later yesterday. He told Stabroek News that he had arrived at the wharf around 1AM as is usual. He noticed two persons walking around with their shirts over their faces but didn’t take any heed as it is customary for other fish vendors and fishermen to cover their heads to shield themselves from the dew.

“I was selling my boat load and I had me money in my hand,” Vishwanauth stated. However, around 3AM the men approached him and one of them fired a shot in the air. The men tried to forcibly take the money from him and he resisted and a scuffle ensued.

Vishwanauth said while he was wrestling with one of the men, the other fired a shot that hit him in the right buttock. The men then took his money and escaped. The police were called and reached some 15 minutes later.

Vishwanauth said the bullet went through his right buttock and is now lodged in his left buttock.

“People were around but nobody coulda do anything ’cause people de scared since the fuss shot was fired,” Vishwanauth explained as he stated that this wasn’t the first time something like that had happened at the wharf. He further explained that the wharf’s security is very bad and anyone is allowed to enter and leave without checks.
