Man pleads guilty to ganja charge after police operation at Schoonord

At the Vreed-en-Hoop court on Monday, a 22-year-old man pleaded guilty to being in possession of a quantity of cannabis sativa and is awaiting sentencing while another accused pleaded not guilty to the offence.

The court heard that on Friday May 1, Daveanand Daniels, 22, of One Mile, Port Kaituma and Laluni St., Queenstown had in his possession 18 pounds of the drug when he was arrested during a police roadblock.

Reports are that police saw him acting in a suspicious manner after he exited a grey Toyota Carina Premio motorcar, PMM 7841 driven by Leroy Goriah, 36, of 111 CC Eccles.

Goriah pleaded not guilty to the charge and was remanded to prison on May 18. Daniels will also return to court on the same date as he too has been placed on remand pending sentencing.

During the operation at Schoonord, West Bank Demerara, police observed the car stopping about 300 ft. away.

Ranks from the La Grange Police Station who were carrying out the operation also noticed the duo exiting the car, which was coming from Georgetown, as though they were checking it.

They also saw when the driver opened the trunk and removed a big bulky red bag and gave it to the passenger. He then drove past the roadblock.

Police in the meantime were focusing their attention on Daniels and began following him. He ran into a nearby housing scheme but police cornered him.

The bag was examined and sources said it contained 10 parcels of compressed marijuana.

He told police that a man had promised him $50,000 to transport the drugs across the bridge. He then accompanied the police to chase the car and it was intercepted a few villages away at Goed Fortuin.
