PSC confident of army preparedness

The Private Sector Commission has said it has full confidence in the preparedness of the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) to support the police during the elections period, after a meeting with Chairman of the Joint Services and GDF Chief-of-Staff Brigadier Mark Phillips and his team on Wednesday.

Brigadier Phillips told PSC executives that the Guyana Police Force is responsible for security and maintaining law and order on elections day and in general and that the role of the GDF is to support the police upon request of the Commissioner of Police, according to a press statement from the group. According to the PSC, the army Chief-of-Staff also said troops have been deployed and confined to barracks in all police divisions across the country and will be ready to support the police if the need arises. Further, the statement said, the Joint Services are prepared for both preventative and pre-emptive actions.

Brigadier Phillips also assured the private sector members that the GDF is a professional organisation and will only operate within the guidelines of the Constitution of Guyana and the Defence Force Act.
