State media workers assured of jobs, urged to act professionally

Staff at the state-owned media organisations have been assured of job security under the David Granger administration with the expectation that they would be professional and committed to unbiased and balanced coverage.

“We assured them that there would be no mass firing and that they should conduct themselves in a professional manner,

giving fair and balanced news coverage,” new Director of Communications at the Office of the President Mark Archer said on Tuesday.

Archer, with Cathy Hughes and Imran Khan, met with workers of the National Communications Network, the Guyana Chronicle and the Government Information Agency (GINA) on Monday.

He said the team wanted to allay the fear of the employees as there were rumours being perpetuated that because Granger had assumed the presidency there would be “mass firings” at the state’s news agencies.

According to Archer, there has been no termination of employment and all department heads have retained their positions.

The employees in turn have promised full cooperation and Archer believes that the team was well received. “People were nervous that persons would be fired… we let them know that the old order won’t be tolerated… it was taken well,” he said.

When they were in opposition, both APNU and the AFC had bemoaned the insignificant amount of airtime they were allowed and blatant abuse of the state’s media resources by the former PPP/C government.
