Burglary accused remanded to prison after misleading court about address

After denying a charge of break and enter and larceny, accused Winford Tinnie got himself remanded to prison by attempting to deceive a city court about his address.

Tinnie, 43, told Magistrate Annette Singh, in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court 11 yesterday that he lives at 209 Diamond, East Bank Demerara.

With a calm disposition, Tinnie, who also said that he was a maintenance worker, fervently denied the charge.

The charge stated that on May 18th, at Diamond, East Bank Demerara, Tinnie broke and entered the property of Lloyd Meusa and stole a bottle of non-alcoholic wine along with five louvre window panes, all valued $3,100 in total.

Prosecutor Adduni Inniss objected to bail, while noting that Tinnie did not have a fixed address and that he had lied to the court when he provided the Diamond address.

Tinnie then interrupted the prosecutor and asked her not to embarrass him since he indeed lives at the address he gave. “Don’t belittle me like that… I don’t drink and smoke, I does sleep underneath a shed at me girl house,” he contended.

The man further stated that he sleeps on a bench under the shed because the house was full.

But the prosecutor said that the police went to the address and it was verified that he did not live there. He was then remanded to prison and was ordered to return to court on June 4th.
