No evidence of fatal accident at Lion Mountain – police

The police have found no evidence that a fatal accident has occurred at Lion Mountain in Region Sevenlast Friday, according traffic chief Ian Amsterdam who says that investigators are yet to find the “survivor” who was treated at Suddie Hospital.

Amsterdam indicated that a team of police officers travelled to the area on Sunday but found nothing. The officer in charge of the Bartica Police Station visited the area again yesterday and nothing was found. He indicated that ranks nonetheless are still checking the Essequibo Coast area as well as the area stretching from Lion Mountain to Bartica.

Stabroek News was told on Sunday that five miners were killed when the truck they were in toppled while descending a hill. Seventeen persons were said to be in the truck which was taking fuel, groceries and employees to a Puruni mining camp.

According to Amsterdam, police made contact with the owner of the truck and he denied that his vehicle was involved in an accident.

Asked about the injured person who was taken to the Suddie Hospital for treatment, the traffic chief said the police are still looking for him. The man had discharged himself from the hospital and has disappeared.

Meanwhile, a police official has described the newspaper reports on the incident as “bizarre”. He said that so far no report of any accident or people dying has been reported to the police on the Essequibo Coast or at Bartica. Noting that Bartica would be the closest place to that area to take injured persons, the official said that no one dead or injured has arrived at the Bartica Hospital and there are no reports of anyone being flown to the city for medical attention.

The official said the commander of the Essequibo Coast area has been contacted for assistance in locating the “survivor”.
