Dear Editor,
Some sections of our population tend to condemn violence against women (this violence can either be physical, verbal or mental), when it suits their agenda; note the condemnation (and rightly so) of the former Minister of Health in respect to Ms Sherlina Nageer; even the females of his party condemned him.
Note the silence in respect to the treatment of Ms Carol Sooba, the Town Clerk (ag), by the Mayor and Councillors of the City of Georgetown.
It is no secret that the relationship between Ms Sooba and the city council was always acrimonious; however, what transpired on Monday May 25, in the hallowed chambers of City Hall was most unbelievable. Ms Sooba’s ‘proctectors,’ having been removed from office, the opportunity was therefore taken to send her on ‘administrative leave,’ in the most humiliating and despicable manner. What was most unfortunate is that senior female staff participated in the exercise.
The organisation that I came from, the Guyana Defence Force, taught us that in victory, one must be magnanimous in ones behaviour to, and treatment of a vanquished foe. The Mayor and his Councillors need to adopt such an attitude.
The Mayor, upon whom the most noble Order of Roraima was conferred, should offer an apology to Ms Sooba, on behalf of the council and citizens of the City of Georgetown. After all she is a woman.
