Teen girl sent to holding centre after days in lock-ups

The 13-year-old who was held in the Bartica Police Station lock-ups, after being charged with wandering, was further remanded yesterday but sent to the Juvenile Holding Centre in Georgetown.

The girl, who has been having sex with a man in his 20s since she was 12, was formally charged on Wednesday and she was remanded.

However, she had been kept in the lock-ups since her arrest on Monday.

Juveniles should be sent to the Juvenile Holding Centre in Georgetown.

The girl’s mother yesterday said she is relieved that her daughter was sent to the Juvenile Holding Centre because of her fear that the man who has been pursuing her daughter would try once more to sneak the girl out of her home.

The mother, however, lamented the conditions under which her daughter was being kept at the lock-ups.

She said the lock-ups was stink with urine and her daughter had to sleep on cardboard boxes. The woman said a prisoner had to speak about the unsanitary condition before her daughter’s cell was cleaned.

The woman said her daughter was so sick of the situation that she did not eat for four days. She said yesterday her daughter had a snack and a soda.

The mother had previously told Stabroek News that her daughter was detained along with the adult man after she reported her missing. She said on Monday they were caught and both of them were charged.

It is unclear what charge was read against the man but she said he was released on $10,000 bail, while her daughter was placed in the lock-ups.
