We need to restart the grow more food campaign

Dear Editor,

While the elections are over and Gecom has declared the final results, and the international observers have made their pronouncements, it’s time for the people of Guyana to get on with their lives.

I wish to remind my fellow citizens that there is an urgent need to take stock of what’s happening politically and economically, both on the local and international scene.

No one should sit and wait for handouts; no government has a magic wand to bring immediate relief or instant economic growth. Lots of planning will have to be done, and systems instituted. It’s time to start the grow more food campaign and eat what we produce. While many of our productive sectors will have to be reorganised to compete with global changes, the people of Guyana must strive for self-sufficiency. I look forward to the new administration following up on my proposal.

Yours faithfully,
A Basir
