Minister of Health, Dr George Norton observed several shortcomings at the Port Mourant Hospital during his visit to Region Six to assess its functional capacity.
According to a press release from GINA, among the areas of concern noted by the Minister was an entire unused upper flat of the hospital which housed a new operating theatre and a surgical ward which “was never utilised since its construction some years ago.”
This facility, Norton said, “is underutilised and could have addressed the problems such as inadequate housing for nurses, along with a resting area for maids.” Complaints were also received by the Minister regarding plumbing issues at the facility. In addition, the Minister pledged the “Ministry’s support to ensure their concerns are addressed and that all nurses, doctors and even maids are treated the same way and given the same type of comfort.”
Besides, the staff indicated their “lack of motivation to move into the new housing quarters, since they have not been a part of the discussions held on the issue.”
Several other health facilities countrywide were visited by the Minister since assuming office, the Skeldon Health Centre which is located also in the Berbice area has been noted as being in in “poor condition.” It has a leaking roof, the release said and “the entire upper flat had to be closed off due to its dilapidated structure.”
The Minister said he will continue to visit the other regions “to assess their level of operation and to determine what are required to ensure they function at a higher level.”
