Guyana U17s lose to Windwards by 103 runs

SCARBOROUGH, Tobago, CMC – Title-holders Barbados rebounded from their opening round loss to trounce Leeward Islands by nine wickets in the second round of the Regional Under-17 Championship here yesterday.

After suffering a heavy 112-run defeat to Windward Islands on Tuesday, the Barbadians showed no ill-effects from that setback as they batted and bowled well to easily overcome the Leewards.

Opting to bowl first, Barbados dismissed the Leewards for a paltry 93 off 31.4 overs, with off-spinner Donte Niles leading with four for 24 and seamer Jarion Hoyte picking up three for ten.

In reply, Thaddaeus Chase hammered 52 not out as Barbados coasted to their target in the 15th over.

Chase faced 46 balls and struck seven fours and three sixes. When opener when Zawandi Whyte fell without scoring in the fourth over, he put on 81 in an unbroken second wicket stand with Shian Brathwaite who finished unbeaten on 39.

At Louis D’Or, Windward Islands signaled their serious intent when they crushed Guyana by 103 runs.

Batting first, they piled up 237 for eight off 50 overs with Kimani Melius top-scoring with 76 from 122 balls, with five fours and three sixes.

Tahj Tavarnier chipped in with 29, Allick Athanaze got 27 while Johann Jeremiah scored 25.

For Guyana, off-spinner Bhaskar Yadram finished with three for 40 while Richie Looknauth, also an off-spinner, took two for 31.

Guyana were then bundled out for 134 off 38.1 overs as the spin twin of Lee Louisy (4-26) and Narun Singh (3-21), did the damage for the Windwards.

Joshua Persaud top-scored with 32 and got support from Rolando Alimohamed with 20.

At Shaw Park, Jamaica also extended their winning streak to two games when they edged Trinidad and Tobago by one wicket.

Batting first, T&R were held to 147 all out off 48.4 overs with Cephas Cooper hitting 65 and Sanjay Williams (2-22) and Javeur Royal (2-29) taking two wickets apiece.

In response, Jamaica reached their target in the 32nd over with Raewin Senior hitting 38 and Kirstan Kallicharran taking four for 49.
