Bandits grab $4M in NA ambush

Two bandits made off with around $4 million in local and foreign currency after ambushing two store workers during a trip to make a bank deposit in New Amsterdam on Monday.

The attack on the store manager and clerk of the A Ally and Songs General Store occurred at around 1:50PM in the vicinity of Strand and New streets, New Amsterdam.

A man armed with a gun walked up the vehicle as the clerk was exiting and demanded the bag containing the cash.

According to the clerk, Annalisa, she was making her way out of the vehicle when she was pounced on by the bandit. While she initially screamed, she went silent after the bandit fired off two rounds from his gun. She was eventually instructed by her boss to hand over the bag, which contained $3.5 million and US$2,500 as well as several checques.

According to an eyewitness, after relieving the clerk of the cash the bandit jumped onto a waiting motorcycle and escaped. The eyewitness related that he noticed the man standing around the area but his presence did not arouse suspicion.

Stabroek News was told by the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the store Fizal Ally that they chased the robbers but the men escaped through an alley and head in the direction of Angoy’s Avenue. Ally explained that if it wasn’t for the alley, they would have caught the men. Nevertheless, he was optimistic about catching the bandits since the area in which the robbery occurred has businesses that are equipped with surveillance cameras.
