Couple remanded on ganja trafficking charge

A couple was yesterday remanded to prison on a drug trafficking charge after police found a quantity of cannabis at a Cuyuni River location.

Rennie Adolphus, 26, and Sonia Grant, 23, appeared before Magistrate Ann McLennan at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts charged with possession of 116 grammes of cannabis for trafficking.

The drug was found on July 12th at Amazon Backdam, Cuyuni River, Essequibo, where the couple resides.

Adolphus and Grant, who have a three-month-old baby together, manage a shop and internet café at the location.

Prosecutor Deniro Jones told the magistrate that the Amazon Backdam location housed several rooms and that the narcotics were found on the couple’s bed. Jones also stated that when the officers notified Adolphus about the cannabis find, he said it belonged to Grant.

Grant and Adolphus were represented by an attorney who stated that the couple was not a flight risk and they had no previous charges or convictions. The attorney also claimed that her clients had no knowledge of the narcotics being on the premises.

After hearing the submissions, Magistrate McLennan remanded the defendants until July 22nd, when they will make their next court appearance.
