Shot toddler recovering well after hospital discharge

The Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation has announced that 18-month-old Jaheem Rudder, who was shot multiple times during an attack last month that left his father dead and his mother wounded, has been discharged and is recovering well.

According to a press release from the hospital, the child’s mother, Mawanza Gills, related that although her son is still experiencing some pain from the six gunshot wounds he received about the body, he is doing well.

Gills reported that her son, who was shot five times in the abdomen and once in his leg, is creeping instead of walking. She said she is not overly concerned as “there is movement in his leg” and she believes that “he is a fighter” and will walk again. Gills praised the treatment the child received at the hospital and thanked the nurses and doctors who treated him in the Intensive Care Unit and the Paediatric Ward, the hospital released added.

Gills, her son and her fiancé Travis Rudder were shot in their Nandy Park home during the wee hours of the morning on June 21st.

Rudder was pronounced dead on arrival at the hospital and Gills and her son were admitted. Gills was also shot seven times in her legs and is nursing several broken bones from those wounds.
