Bus driver refused bail on causing death charge

A minibus driver was yesterday remanded to prison after being charged with causing the death of a 60-year-old man, who was struck down last Friday evening.

Fitzroy Alder, 38, of Lot 36 East Ruimveldt, Georgetown, was charged with driving minibus BTT 3835 in a reckless and dangerous manner on July 17, thereby causing the death of Romell Juner.

Prosecutor Neville Jeffers told Magistrate Ann McLennan that Alder, a Route 41 minibus driver, allegedly drove at a fast rate between d’Urban and Lime streets, where he hit Juner, causing him to pitch several feet and lose consciousness.

Jeffers noted that Juner was rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

The prosecution objected to bail on the grounds that Alder drove recklessly and at a high speed.

Bail was refused and the case was adjourned until August 10, when Alder will make his next court appearance.

Stabroek News was told that Juner had been drinking at the Pavement View bar along with a female friend just before the accident, which occurred around 9.45 pm. He was said to be making his way across the road when he was struck down by the bus.
